Be A Shelter Volunteer
Let us count the ways you can be a shelter-helper
Join our team of volunteers! There are many ways to help the animals at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Call the Shelter at 336-297-5020 or use our online contact form to learn more about volunteer opportunities.
Petsmart Adoption Fairs
We need volunteers to help with adoption fairs every Saturday and Sunday. This would involve picking animals up from the shelter and taking them to the Petsmart location, holding the animals during the fair while assisting with the adoption process, and bringing the animals back to the shelter at the end of the day. Volunteers are needed for any or all of these parts of the fair. (This is a great parent-child activity).
Rabies Clinics Volunteers
The animal shelter provides low cost Rabies and Microchip Clinics to the public up to twice a month. Volunteers would assist customers with paperwork, as well as assist the veterinarians giving the vaccinations or chips.
Greeters
The animal shelter attracts a great number of visitors. We are looking for greeters to assist these customers in finding the right pet for their home. Greeters will guide customers through the adoption areas while answering questions and instructing them as to the adoption process. Greeters will also assist the customer in taking an animal out to socialize.
Clerical Work
We always have papers that need to filed, letters that need to be sent, and information that needs to be entered in the computer. If you are interested in volunteering, but would like to participate in more quiet service, this might be the job for you.
We also need people to call Volunteers about upcoming events and Foster Families about animals that need to be fostered.
Events Planner
We need people to arrange and plan adoption fairs, fundraisers, and publicity events. These volunteers would organize car washes, food drives, raffles and other such events. If you are an idea person, and would love to volunteer your talents, please contact us.
Transportation
Two to four times a month, we need volunteers to transport animals to local TV Stations. We have steady spots of Fox 8 and WXII. Volunteers would drive animals to the station and provide information about the animals to the newscaster. Afterwards the animals would be brought back to the shelter.
Education Program
Five to Six times a month, we visit Schools, Churches, and Assisted Living Centers for education and pet therapy purposes. Volunteers would take an animal as well as some educational information to these sites and interact with the groups there.
Newsletter Contributor
We need people to write stories, gather advertisements, and take pictures for the newsletter. The newsletter comes out quarterly and contributions are always needed.
Foster Parents
We desperately need volunteers that can offer up their home as a temporary residency for some of our pets. We need homes for mothers that are nursing young, as well as orphans that are too young for adoption. This experience is temporary, ranging from two to eight weeks. These animals are then returned to the shelter and placed in adoption. Read more about becoming a Foster Parent.
Groomers
Many of the animals that are brought in have not received proper care. Their fur may be mangled or shaggy. The chance of getting adopted greatly increases if an animal has been bathed and groomed. Grooming experience helpful.
